Botanical Walk, 5 km
Thu October 16, 2014 @ 13:00 – 16:00
Discover a hidden world of plants within an ancient forest.
This is a leisurely walk with explanations about the geology and plant world seen in the different ecosystems encountered: Open landscape, ancient semi-natural woodlands and the shore in the valley along the river Esk.
The meeting point is a car park near Rosewell, here is the Google Map Link, coordinates are 55°51’14.0″N 3°08’39.3″W. The nearest bus stop is Gorton Road in Rosewell, which you can get to by Lothian Buses number 49 and X31.
If you are cycling, the Penicuik to Dalkith / Musselburgh walkway is the most convenient, most traffic-free way of getting to the meeting point from either the Roslin and Penicuik areas, or Dalkeith / Bonnyrigg / Whitecraig / Musselburgh. More information can be found here.
On this walk you will see different types of vegetation and learn how to identify trees and shrubs. We will see beautiful scenery and go through an impressive old forest.
Distance and route are to some extent flexible depending on how far the participants would like to go. We will walk back to the meeting point within the allocated time. It is also possible to walk to Roslin along the river to get public transport there and one of the walk organizers can walk that way if some participants would like to do this.
The walk will be about 5km and probably will not last the full three hours, but it depends on our progress and how far everybody would like to go.
The walk is organized by Kata and Johanna. They are working as scientists in a molecular biology lab at the University of Edinburgh and they both have a second love in science.
Kata (on the left) is a geoscience graduate but works in biology and will tell you some interesting facts about the geology of the area. Johanna (on the right) is a geo-ecologist as well as a biologist and loves the outdoors She will explain the plant life to you.
This event will be free but ticketed- you can get tickets here or at the URL in the ticket section below.
This venue is not wheelchair accessible.
Family friendly, but need to be able to walk 5km.
