Get up close and hands on with the nature and wildlife on your doorstep with this series of mini workshops!

Bee Workshop – 11-11:50 and 14:00-14:50 @ Beekeeping Hut – Organised by Roslin Institute/Newbattle Beekeepers
Join experts from Newbattle Beekeepers Association and The Roslin Institute to learn all about bees. Get close up with our microscopes, investigate our virtual hive, dress like a beekeeper and taste a range of delicious honeys.
Build a Nestbox – 10-10:50 and 13:00 – 13:50 @ The Gatehouse – Organised by RSPB
Give a bird a home! Build a bird nest box from a ready made kit, with help from bird experts from the RSPB. Suggested £5 donation to cover costs of materials.
Fungi ID – 11 – 11:50 and 15:00 – 15:50 @ The Gatehouse – Organised by Woodland Trust
A complete beginner in all things fungi? Come along to this workshop to find out about this amazing kingdom – including how they are fundamental to the success of plants across the globe, how they benefit human health and could help us restore our ecosystems. We will then look at the features of mushrooms that you would need to record to identify them to species level – all good skills for bioblitzing!
Stream Dipping – 10:00 – 10:50 @ The Grounds – Organised by Newbattle Abbey Rangers
Splash about with the Woodland Ranger to find out what creepy crawlies live in the River Esk using a net and tray. Wellies and waterproofs are essential and children under 18 must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times (please book tickets for both adults and children attending the session). Please note, this activity may be cancelled at short notice if the river is too high – the alternative activity will be bug hunting or a wildlife walk.
Guided Nature Walk – 14:00 – 14:50 @ The Grounds – Organised by Newbattle Abbey Rangers
Join the Woodland Ranger for an explore round Lord Ancrum’s Wood looking at the wildlife that lives there and learning about the history of this amazing location.
Plants & Trees Walk – 12:00 – 12:50 @ The Grounds – Organised by The Wildlife Information Centre
Join The Wildlife Centre’s Acting Manager for a walk to explore some of the wide variety of trees and plants in the Newbattle College’s grounds. Learn some key identification features and hints and tips for studying plants.
Wildlife Recording Walk – 14:00 – 14:50 @ The Grounds – Organised by The Wildlide Information Centre
Join The Wildlife Information Centre’s Acting Manager on a walk to learn about the essentials of wildlife recording and why it matters.
Bird ID Walk – (11:00 – 11:50) and (15:00 – 15:50) @ The Grounds – Organised by RSPB
Join bird experts from the RSPB for a walk around Newbattle Abbey College’s grounds and learn how to identify the birds that you commonly see and hear.
PLEASE NOTE: The availability of our outdoor activities is weather-dependent. We will go ahead in the rain, so please bring appropriate clothing, but in the event of severe weather and activity cancellation on the day, activities will be moved indoors if possible.
Children under 16 must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times – please book tickets for both adults and children attending this session.
We will have an indoor space available between 12pm – 2pm (courtesy of Newbattle Beekeepers, Bee Academy space) to eat a packed lunch, get a hot drink and warm up.
