Explore patterns and types of wounds produced on the battlefield- gory but fascinating!

Throughout recorded time conflicts have led to wounding and death on the battlefield and these have been recorded to varying degrees, along with developments in surgical treatment.

This talk examines the patterns and types of wounds produced on the battlefield from the 1800s to the present day from the point of view of the pathologist.

Firstly, the main types of battlefield wounds and their consequences will be described in accessible terms and historical illustrations provided; the role of infection in the pathology of battlefield wounds will be emphasised.
Secondly, 6 case studies of wounding from the Napoleonic Wars through to the present day will be presented. These serve to demonstrate the evolution of weaponry leading to different types of wounds and the remarkable co-evolution of surgical practice and treatments to meet these new challenges. Examples taken from the collection of the Royal College of Surgeons, Surgeons Hall Museum, Edinburgh, will be used throughout.

Images of wounds and their consequences will be shown throughout the talk.

Please note that Mayfield Library has disabled access, but not toilet facilities.

This event is free but ticketed.  You can get tickets here or via the URL in the ticket section below.
