Core Festival Volunteer

Applications are now open…. see application form at the bottom of this page

New for the 2017 festival we are offering a limited number of voluntary roles to postgraduate students interested in science communication, public engagement, event and festival management to help with the planning of and delivery of the Midlothian Science Festival.

What is a Core Festival Volunteer?

As one of our core festival volunteers you will be involved with all aspects of the festival including planning, promotional campaigns, administration, and logistics. You will also have the opportunity to plan your own science based event to deliver during the festival.

What kind of work will a Core Festival Volunteer do?

As part of this small team you can get involved with and assist with:

1. Festival planning, administration, promotion & logistics

• Helping to produce the promotional brochure – including writing text and selecting images
• Writing articles and press releases
• Creating festival posters and flyers
• Developing and editing website content
• Creating a social media campaign

• Exploring fundraising opportunities

2. Planning and delivering your own science activity

You will also be supported to (individually or in small groups) develop and deliver your own science based event during the festival.

What is the commitment?

The group will meet monthly from May 2017 to discuss ideas for the festival and and agree any jobs / tasks. Between each meeting individuals and small groups will be given responsibility for their own specific jobs to complete. You can therefore take on more or less work depending on any other committments you have.

Ideally you will be available throughout most of the summer (to attend meetings) and you would also need to be available during the two weeks of the festival (to deliver your event and provide a few hours of additional support at other events)

What experience / skills do I need?

No specific experience is required. But we would like enthusiastic, reliable and motivated people please!

A passion for delivering public engagement and science communication projects is desirable,  as is any experience in running events.

But we very much appreciate that volunteers often volunteer to gain experience and learn – so come and do that with us!

How do I apply?

If you would like to apply to become a Core Festival Volunteer please fill in this (very short) application form and email it to info@midlothiansciencefestival.com
